Kalvin Phillips is set to be at the centre of heavyweight Premier League interest next summer.

Liverpool will battle Manchester United to sign Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips next summer, according to reports. Phillips would also favour a move to Liverpool due to his hometown club's long-standing rivalry with the latter it has been claimed.

The 25-year-old has risen to prominence over the last couple of seasons through his achievements for club and country.

After helping Leeds gain promotion back to the Premier League, he impressed in his debut top-flight season and entered Gareth Southgate's England plans.

Phillips played a crucial role in England's memorable Euro 2020 run in the summer, prompting his reputation to grow further.

This term, he is thriving again as Leeds' talisman, and his performances have resulted in more speculation over a big move.

According to the Daily Star, United are eyeing a £60million deal for Phillips next year and have made him one of their transfer priorities.

But Liverpool have entered the picture, and Jurgen Klopp is monitoring Phillips as he's keen to bolster his midfield ranks.

The England ace's future could depend on whether Marcelo Bielsa departs Elland Road at the end of the season.

Bielsa's exit would leave him pondering his long-term aims, especially regarding winning trophies.

The Star add that Phillips would prefer to join Liverpool if he decides to leave West Yorkshire and they show a similar level of interest as United.

He holds concerns over how a move to the Red Devils would impact his family, who all reside in Leeds.

Such a stance gives Liverpool an advantage over their bitter rivals, while Leeds are still pushing hard to tie Phillips down to a lucrative new contract.

His current deal runs until 2024, with negotiations underway between director of football Victor Orta and the player's representatives.

Phillips hasn't stated his desire for a new challenge, but Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani is aware that heavyweight interest is on the horizon.

A new contract would likely make him the highest-paid player at the club, and in September, his agent explained that talks progressed well over the summer.

He said: "I've had positive discussions with Leeds United throughout the summer on a new contract for Kalvin.

"Talks are ongoing and I can only see a positive outcome. Kalvin's desire is to stay at Leeds United and there is a real willingness from all sides to make it happen."
