Mauricio Pochettino remains as Manchester United's number one choice, Daily Star Sport can reveal, to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should the Norwegian be relieved of his duties.

United were embarrassed 5-0 by Liverpool on Sunday, raising questions about Solskjaer's future at the club.

However, the board want some time to plan their next appointment, and Solskjaer could be handed a lifeline until the next international break.

The wait would also give chance for United to gauge the availability of Pochettino, who remains their top target while also being rated by Sir Alex Ferguson.

Pochettino is currently at the helm of PSG, but he has been linked with Old Trafford job numerous times.

United's original plan was for Solskjaer to act as a bridge between Jose Mourinho before Pochettino arrived.

However, after Solskjaer's triumph at PSG, the Norwegian was handed the permanent role, leaving Pochettino to eventually land the role at the Parisian side.

With Pochettino piloting the formidable front three of Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe, he could be difficult to prize away from PSG, though.

Antonio Conte has been placed as the bookies favourite should Solskjaer be given his marching orders.

However, there are boardroom doubts about the Italian, and he could represent a significant culture shift with his defensive style of play.

Zinedine Zidane is also available after leaving Real Madrid, but Zidane isn't the hands-on manager that United require for a significant rebuild.

Yet Pochettino is the choice of Sir Alex, with the Scotsman being a huge admirer of the Argentine's style of play.

The Red Devils are still looking for their long-term replacement of Sir Alex, and United have become a revolving door of managers since the Scotsman left.

Pochettino offers the style of play that United want from their manager, and he could be given time to rebuild the squad in his image.
