Newcastle United have discovered Jose Mourinho’s stance on leaving Roma to replace Steve Bruce at St James’ Park. Bruce’s position at the Magpies appears to be in a perilous state following Sunday’s visit of Tottenham Hotspur.

Newcastle were recently taken over by the mega-rich Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia and look set to go on a major recruitment drive.

That recruitment drive is set to include the appointment of a new manager as well as the sacking of Bruce.

This is Bruce’s third season in charge of the Magpies, but he was coming under pressure before the takeover took place.

Newcastle currently find themselves second bottom of the Premier League and are yet to win a league game this season.

In fact, Bruce has only won seven of his last 37 games in charge, though he will remain in his post for the visit of Spurs.

But his long-term future at the club appears to be bleak, with the new ownership set to appoint their own star name.

One of those linked to the job was Mourinho, who is in his first season in charge of Serie A giants Roma.

The Portuguese boss has been one of the best managers of his generation, winning numerous trophies at Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United.

His career has suffered blows in his most recent spells though, with Tottenham sacking him a week before last season’s Carabao Cup final.

Roma offered him an immediate route back into management soon after his exit, bringing him back to Italy for the first time since he won the treble with Inter Milan.

But he had been linked with an earlier exit from the I Giallorossi to lead Newcastle’s transformation from relegation candidates into trophy contenders.

Those reports appear to have been misguided though, with La Repubblica stating that Mourinho is 'fine with Roma'.

Mourinho is said be a 'man of his word' and it is not expected that he will be departing the Stadio Olimpico.

The report goes as far as to say that there at currently “no offers” that would “change his mind” from seeing out his three-year contract at Roma.

His time in the Italian capital has started well, with Roma winning five of their first seven Serie A games to take them to fourth in the table.

Their next game is a mouth-watering clash with Juventus, with a win able to take them above Mourinho’s former club Inter.

It appears then that another name has been crossed off the shortlist for Bruce’s replacement, with Rafa Benitez and Brendan Rodgers having already ruled themselves out of the running.
