Steven Gerrard has been linked with the Newcastle United hotseat amid speculation Steve Bruce could be sacked following the Premier League club's £300m Saudi takeover

Steven Gerrard is reportedly "intrigued" by the prospect of replacing Steve Bruce as Newcastle United manager following the £305million takeover of the Premier League club. The Rangers boss and former Liverpool star is one of the names linked with the hotseat amid speculation Bruce could be sacked, after Mike Ashley completed the sale of the club to a Saudi Arabia-backed consortium.

Newcastle now boast the wealthiest football club owners on the planet after the takeover was confirmed on Thursday.

Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), backed by the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, now owns 80 per cent of the club.

PIF Governer, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, is the club's new chairman, succeeding Ashley, who replaced Sir John Hall in 2007.

British businesswoman Amanda Staveley and the Reuben brothers - David and Simon - have equally split the remaining 20 per cent.

Staveley said the club now have the same silverware ambitions as the likes of Manchester City and PSG, and there has been much speculation that Bruce could be sacked with fans desperate to have a new manager in charge.

Gerrard has been tipped as a potential replacement, having led Rangers back to the top of Scottish football last season.

The 41-year-old is said to be 'intrigued' by the situation at Newcastle, with sources in Scotland saying this could be his final season in the Ibrox hotseat, according to the Daily Mail.

The publication also cites Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers as a contender for the job, saying Bruce will be sacked with an £8m pay-off.

Former Liverpool skipper Gerrard led Rangers to an unbeaten league season on their way to dethroning Celtic as Scottish champions in 2020/21.

They secured the title - their 55th Scottish championship - at the earliest date a team has ever won it.

Gerrard's success in his first managerial role has led to many Liverpool fans tipping him to eventually replace Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

The former Manchester United and Tottenham forward said on talkSPORT: "If Steven Gerrard comes down. What is it – 100 miles to Newcastle?

"Waits for Jurgen to head off into green pastures and slips in because I think Amanda Staveley is a big Liverpool fan. It all fits in. It all fits in, of course it does."

Newcastle's next game is at home to Tottenham in the Premier League on October 17.
