A footballer with Brighton & Hove Albion has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault following an alleged incident at a nightclub in the early hours of Wednesday

A Brighton & Hove Albion player has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault after being removed from a nightclub on Brighton seafront in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The Premier League footballer, understood to be in his twenties, was detained alongside a man in his forties after a report of sexual assault at the venue.

According to The Times, the player, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was led away by police officers from The Arch nightclub in handcuffs.

He has been kept at a local police station for questioning but it is anticipated he will be released this evening.

The alleged offence is believed to concern the player and the man in his forties in a public area of the nightclub.

A statement from Brighton said: "Brighton and Hove Albion are aware that one of its players is assisting police with the investigation of an alleged offence. The matter is subject to a legal process and the club is therefore unable to make further comment at this time."

A spokesman for Sussex police said: "Two men have been arrested after a woman reported being sexually assaulted at a venue in Brighton, in the early hours of Wednesday.

"A man in his forties and a man in his twenties, both from Brighton, were arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and remain in police custody at this time."

Brighton are currently sixth in the Premier League table with 14 points from their opening seven matches.

It is their best ever start to a Premier League season.
