The causes of Ancelotti's first Real Madrid crisis

Alarm bells are ringing at Real Madrid after an eight-day period in which Carlo Ancelotti's side have accumulated two defeats and a draw.

After the 6-1 thrashing of Real Mallorca, Los Blancos have drawn 0-0 with Villarreal, lost 2-1 at home to Sherriff Tiraspol and lost 2-1 away to Espanyol in LaLiga Santander.

Three games without a win equates to a crisis at Real Madrid, and although Ancelotti has a lot of credit in the bank, he needs to turn things around quickly.

Goals have dried up dramatically, with Karim Benzema the only one looking capable of finding the net, and defensively they look very shaky, having conceded twice in their last two games.

Alaba has had to be moved out of position

The back line has been greatly affected by injuries to full-backs, and although Ancelotti insisted that David Alaba would play central defence, he was moved to left-back against Espanyol following an unconvincing display from Miguel Gutierrez in Europe.

A system change to a 4-4-2 also didn't work well in the first half, with Eden Hazard having to also settle for a place on the bench.

Real Madrid have dropped seven points in eight league games and have lost top spot in their Champions League group, but they do still top LaLiga Santander, albeit they are level on points with Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad.

Ancelotti doesn't like the international break, and it's come at a particularly bad time as his side are struggling for form.

With the South American players not returning from international duty until October 15, Real Madrid's match against Athletic Club has been postponed and will be played at a later date.

This will mean an 18-day break, with their first game back coming against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on October 19, and the Italian will be pondering solutions to his defensive and attacking problems in that time.

There is also the small matter of the Clasico after the international break, a game which could see Barcelona go top of LaLiga Santander, assuming they first beat Valencia.

With the current state of this Barcelona side, dropping behind them in the league would be particularly concerning for Real Madrid.
