Liverpool to have third biggest ground in Premier League as Anfield expansion confirmed

The Reds will begin their development of the Anfield Road Stand next week which will see the ground become the third-largest club stadium in the Premier League after completion in 2023

Liverpool will officially start working on a project to increase the capacity of their Anfield stadium to allow more than 61,000 fans to attend games.

The expansion was granted planning permission in June and will look to add 7,000 additional seats to the ground, making Anfield the third-largest club stadium in the country after Manchester United’s Old Trafford and the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

This comes five years after the most recent work on Anfield which added 8,500 seats.

A ground-breaking ceremony is set to take place next week to mark the redevelopments, which are expected to be completed by the start of the 2023/24 season.

Liverpool managing director Andy Hughes told the official club website: “We have been clear from the beginning that in order for this expansion to go ahead we needed the co-operation of local residents and the community, to successfully navigate the complex planning landscape, and to ensure the project is financially viable.

"We needed certainty for this project to progress and are now in a position to be able to move forward.

"We began this journey in 2014 and are grateful to everyone for the contributions they have made to bring the project to this stage."

The redevelopment is expected to cost the club a total in the region of £60million.

A newly designed Anfield Road Stand will see the lower tier remain unchanged while the upper tier will be renovated and expanded, creating 400 match-day roles for stewards and staff at the hospitality facilities.

The Reds have also been granted permission to host up to six concerts and other major events at the stadium for the five seasons after.
