Derby County may have railed to beat Stoke on Saturday despite the threat of a mammoth points deduction - but their bad news looks set to continue into next season after entering administration

Derby County could be docked a mammoth 39 points across just two Football League seasons after being placed into administration by chairman Mel Morris on Friday evening.

Wayne Rooney's side may have given fans much-needed boost by beating Stoke by two goals to nil in the Championship on Saturday at Pride Park, but those cheers won't have lasted too long.

The Rams are set to be hit by a points deduction of 12 upon the appointment of an administrator, with a further nine point penalty for breaching the EFL’s financial regulations.

Despite that deduction making survival a tough ask, it might not be the last of their woe - with further punishment set to come during the 2021/22 campaign.

According to The Mirror, a further three points could be taken for non-payment of wages, but administration could make that rule redundant.

However, if Derby don't meet certain obligations for the new campaign, they could be stripped of a further 15 points in the division they play in next season.

Rooney told Sky Sports of Friday's update: "I've spoken to (CEO) Stephen Pearce after it but initially had seen it on TV. I haven't spoken with Mel. I'm sure he's got other things on his mind."
