The story behind Benzema's bandaged hand

Some fans think it is down to superstition, but it has come to light that Karim Benzema straps up his right hand before every game due to an injury sustained against Real Betis in January 2019 that still hasn't been fixed.

The injury occurred following a clash with Betis defender Marc Bartra, leaving Benzema with a fractured finger. At the time he was told that surgery would leave him on the sidelines for two months. Instead of leaving Real Madrid without their starting striker, Benzema opted to wait until the end of the season to have the operation.

Despite the surgery being a success, the 33-year-old rushed his rehabilitation to be available for the start of the next season. Upon his return, his hand received another blow and he has worn a bandage ever since due to not being able to give enough time post-op for it to heal.

Real Madrid's No.9 has not let his injury prevent him from performing for his team; in fact, since his injury he has been in fine form. In each season since his injury in 2018/19 Benzema has scored 30 goals, 27 goals and 34 goals respectively. He already has two goals in three league games this time around.

After enjoying plenty of success since donning the bandage, Benzema does not look in a hurry to have his hand operated on, which could see it sorted once and for all. If it is superstition as to why he has not sorted his injury out, he will have to get it operated on towards the end of his career.

For now, it makes for apt comparison with former Real Madrid stars Jose Antonio Camacho and Chendo, who wore bandages in their playing days. A sign of Real Madrid's history and tradition continues through Benzema.
