PSG give up on Messi signing

While Lionel Messi technically remains a free agent, Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly thrown in the towel and admitted defeat in their attempts to sign him.

The French club haven't hidden their interest in the Argentine in the past, but it now seems that the feeling is not mutual and hence they have decided to shelve their attempts to reunite him with Neymar, who will be disappointed not to see his wish come true.

The news, reported by Le Parisien, will come as a great relief to Barcelona fans as it may point to Messi's renewal at the Camp Nou being simply a matter of time.

The 34-year-old has been out of contract for almost two weeks now, though, as the Blaugrana attempt to adjust their wage budget to make re-signing him a viable option.

President Joan Laporta continues to call for calm and maintains that all is going well, saying on Monday that Messi's renewal is "progressing adequately".

Messi himself is beginning a period of well-earned rest after winning the Copa America with Argentina.

No Neymar reunion

After that Copa America final, the good relationship between Messi and Neymar was there for all to see, but they won't be wearing the same shirt again any time soon.

Neymar spoke openly last year about his desire to team up with his friend again, sparking rumours that one of them could be on the move this summer.

Since then, however, Neymar has renewed his deal at PSG and Messi appears on course to do likewise at Barcelona.
