Raphael Varane 'wants £400,000-a-week' to join Man Utd - but is keen on transfer

Raphael Varane is keen on a Manchester United move as his current club, Real Madrid, enter a period of transition.

The French World Cup winner has been at the club since 2011 but now feels it’s the right time to move on, with several star players as well as coach Zinedine Zidane having departed in recent years.

Captain Sergio Ramos was the latest player to go following the news that he wouldn’t be given an extension to his contract, and that has led Varane to believe he is entering a new era.

According to The Independent, the 28-year-old is of keen interest to Manchester United, but his wage demand of around £400,000-a-week could prove to be a stumbling block in any potential deal.

The Old Trafford club are tempted by the ease at which a deal may be possible – there’s a quality centre-half available for a lower price than they would have had to pay in any other year, and that is mainly due to the fact that the defender’s contract runs out next year and Real Madrid could lose him on a free.

Other than Manchester United, French side Paris Saint-Germain are also an option for Varane, but the player is said to be keen on a move to the Premier League.

United have long been in the market for a new defender to accompany club captain Harry Maguire and Varane is amongst the shortlist consisting of Villarreal’s Pau Torres and Sevilla’s Jules Kounde.

Having finished second last season and lost the Europa League final, they will want to bolster their squad to close the gap between themselves and Manchester City and challenge in Europe.

A move for Jadon Sancho is reportedly close, with the United and Borussia Dortmund negotiating a fee and that long transfer saga looks set to end soon.

Other than that, they are also looking to add a defensive midfielder to the team whilst Atletico Madrid’s English right-back Kieran Trippier is also on their radar.
