Solskjaer's March comments are bad news for Lingard and his long-term Man Utd future

Jesse Lingard has thrived since joining West Ham on loan from Manchester United in January - but his time at Old Trafford could still come to a permanent end this summer

Manchester United's decision to send Jesse Lingard on loan to West Ham in January has been a very successful one considering his return to form - but that doesn't mean he has a place at Old Trafford.

The forward has fired his way back into England contention ahead of Euro 2020 by scoring nine goals in just 13 Premier League outings - and was named PFA player of the month for April.

Lingard, 28, has been on the books at United since he was the age of seven way back in 2000, but the comments of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have suggested that there is no way back into their first-team.

That is due to the form of Bruno Fernandes in his attacking midfield role, having managed an astonishing 40 goals and 25 assists across just 78 appearances.

When asked about the form of Lingard back in March, Solskjaer said: "It has really worked out for Jesse, for David [Moyes] and for us as a club as well.

"We know Jesse's position is a 10 and we've got Bruno (Fernandes) there.

"For me, it was a no-brainer to get Jesse a chance to prove himself and play some football again.

"He has been really bright for them. He's finally back to himself."

The comments suggest that while Fernandes remains fit and in form at Old Trafford - there won't be a place for Lingard in the first-team plans under the Norwegian.

The England forward said of his own plans: "Yeah, I'm really pleased.

"Like I say, I just really wanted regular football and, you know, when I play week in, week out it builds confidence.

"I've been scoring goals and assisting to help my team - it's been amazing. Like I say, I just want to carry on that run of form now."

Moyes added of a potential permanent deal: "I'm not sure how realistic it is.

"I think Jesse has enjoyed himself, I hope he has, we've enjoyed having him.

"Manchester United, he is their player so they can decide what to do with him.

"If they choose that they want to let him go then I'd hope he'd consider us as one of his options."
