Mesut Ozil couldn't resist taking a dig at Tottenham tonight after they lost the Carabao Cup final to Manchester City at Wembley earlier this afternoon. Aymeric Laporte's late header was enough to ensure Pep Guardiola's side won their fourth successive League Cup, which could be one of three trophies this season.

It was a familiar story for Tottenham though, who have not tasted silverware since they won the competition back in 2007.

They have come close to winning a trophy on a number of occasions in recent years including the 2015 final and 2019 Champions League final but once again, they left with a runners-up medal.

Ozil clearly took satisfaction in the result and maintained his good relations with Arsenal supporters on social media by trolling their north London rivals.

He tweeted: "It remains dusty... #LeagueCupFinal"

The post appeared to be mocking Tottenham's trophy cabinet and Spurs fans needed no invitation to bite in response to his comment.

"Your career is dusty," one responded.

"You are finished," said another. While another posted: "Just like your career."

It's not the first time Ozil has taken aim at Tottenham since leaving the Emirates Stadium three months ago.

During a Q&A, the German international was asked whether he'd rather sign for Tottenham or retire.

To which he responded: "Easy question! Retire."

The post was then put to former Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho during his press conference and the Portuguese - who managed Ozil at Real Madrid - was having none of it.

“Who told him that Tottenham would be interested in signing him?” Mourinho said.

Ozil was late to the party after watching his side Fenerbahce secure a vital 3-1 win over Kasimpasa in the Turkish Super Lig.

The win keeps the club's title hopes alive with Besiktas currently leading the way by three points with five games to play.

The attacking midfielder was absent though with injury, as his difficult start to life at Fenerbahce continues.

Ozil picked up an outer ligament tear in his ankle at the beginning of March and is yet to return to action.
