Neymar is understood to be open to a return to Barcelona.

The Brazilian enjoyed some of the best years of his career in Catalonia, forming the famed MSN trident, which consisted of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and himself.

With new Barcelona president Joan Laporta also willing to make the deal happen, much depends on the financial sums on both sides.

Laporta might want to get the deal done, but his hands are tied somewhat by Barcelona's perilous economic position.

The idea is said to be on the table because it might convince Messi to stay at the club, but Neymar's arrival would incur an exorbitant transfer fee, as well as the small matter of his wages, which are 70 million euros gross annually at Paris Saint-Germain.

There's also the issue of the cold relationship between PSG and Barcelona, which has seen the Catalans try and ensnare numerous players away from the French capital in recent seasons, such as Thiago Silva and Angel Di Maria, all to no avail.

As well as convincing Messi to remain with the Blaugrana, Laporta knows that getting Neymar - one of the world's greatest players - could transform his club into Champions League contenders once more.

Neymar is believed to be willing to take wage cut if the deal did come off, which is an interesting dynamic given he is also negotiating a new contract with PSG at the moment.

The two parties - PSG and Neymar - are said to have a compromise agreement in place, but there's been no confirmation of what that entails.

And while that's the case, Barcelona will continue to make noises towards their ex-star.

Whether it's Neymar or someone else, the Blaugrana want to make a statement signing in the summer.

Haaland is on Barcelona's shortlist

Any move for Erling Haaland is complicated by the presence of Mino Raiola in the Norwegian goal machine's camp, given the famed agent would not accept a wage reduction for his client.

Lautaro Martinez and Sergio Aguero are two other options, with the latter having the benefit of being a free agent.

The results of Barcelona's annual audit are yet to be revealed, and that could be the key to getting any of these moves done.

Some sources say their financial position is likely to be worse than first thought, and that could scupper Laporta's grand plans.

It would mean a fire sale would be needed to create funds, and the likes of Miralem Pjanic, Philippe Coutinho and Samuel Umtiti could all be moved on with that goal in mind.

Messi continues to be the elephant in the room

Messi's dad, Jorge, arrived in Barcelona last weekend, but Laporta - as a result of the ongoing audit - is understood to be in no rush to meet him, even though time is running out to secure the Argentine to a new contract.
