Danny Welbeck was left raging after being denied a debatable penalty shout in Brighton's narrow 2-1 loss at Old Trafford.

Manchester United came from behind to snatch all three points in the Premier League clash on Sunday evening.

Marcus Rashford cancelled out Welbeck's first-half opener before Mason Greenwood's header completed the second-half turnaround seven minutes from time.

But while the game was level at 1-1, referee Mike Dean controversially opted against awarding United's former academy graduate a spot-kick.

Welbeck stretched out to try and convert a low cross and appeared to be caught by Harry Maguire, however the challenge was not deemed to be a foul.

Rio Ferdinand, who used to play with Welbeck during his latter days at United, was analysing the game on BT Sport.

After the match and following an advert break, presenter Jake Humphrey asked Ferdinand, who was texting on his phone: "What are you looking at?"

Ferdinand replied: "Danny Welbeck, he's not happy at all Danny Welbeck about not giving him a penalty."

"I had to text him back there. He got a bit personal on the group text."

Jake wondered: "In all seriousness, does he think it's a penalty?"

And Ferdinand added: "He's adamant it's a penalty. I'm going to meet him outside in a minute actually when we've finished this (laughing)."

Brighton boss Graham Potter told the BBC after the game: "Maybe a penalty which Danny Welbeck didn't get.

"When it was live I thought it was a penalty then I suppose it's the clear and obvious debate.

"If Mike Dean had given it I don't think VAR would have overuled it. There's nothing we can do in the end. We're disappointed to come away with nothing."
