Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs was arrested last November on suspicion of assaulting his girlfriend, which he denies, leading to a “special leave” from Wales duty that will continue this month

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs will not be managing Wales during the World Cup qualifiers later this month as he remains on bail.

The Welshman was arrested on November 1 last year on suspicion of assaulting his girlfriend Kate Greville, which Giggs denies.

With the 47-year-old getting his bail extended by Greater Manchester Police to May 1, it means he will be out of action for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

It will see assistant manager Robert Page step into Giggs’ seat, which he did for the last international break in November.

A statement from the Welsh FA reads: “The Football Association of Wales (FAW) and Ryan Giggs have mutually agreed that he will not be involved in the upcoming international camp.

"Robert Page will take charge for the next three matches against Belgium, Mexico and the Czech Republic and will be supported by Albert Stuivenberg as was the case during the last international window in November."

Giggs will miss qualifiers against world No.1 side Belgium in Leuven on March 24 before welcoming Czech Republic to Cardiff City’s ground six days later.

While a friendly against Mexico between the two fixtures will also be missed by the Welsh manager.

Giggs is still waiting to hear from the Crown Prosecution Service as to whether he still has a case to answer.

The former United winger has denied the allegations.

A representative for Giggs confirmed back in November he was cooperating with police.

The statement read: "Mr Giggs denies all allegations of assault made against him. He is cooperating with the police and will continue to assist them with their ongoing investigations."

The extension of his bail to May 1 means clashes against Belgium and Czech Republic - plus a friendly against Mexico - will be missed

The Wales manager was questioned by police and released on bail at the time.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said back in November: “Police were called at 10.05pm on Sunday to reports of a disturbance. A woman in her 30s sustained minor injuries but did not require any treatment.

"A 46-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of section 47 assault and section 39 common assault.”
