Manchester United have enjoyed success with the arrival of Edinson Cavani to boost their attacking options - and they could use the same strategy to lure Sergio Ramos to the defence

Manchester United could sign a world-class “stop-gap” for their defence to provide a solution in the same way as Edinson Cavani.

The 33-year-old forward arrived at Old Trafford as a free agent last October, following his release from PSG.

And the French side’s all-time top scorer has shown he has still got it, scoring seven goals while taking on a leadership role upfront.

It has seen the Red Devils score the most goals in the Premier League after 23 games at 49, sitting five points behind leaders Manchester City.

Now Forbes have reported that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could use the same approach to solve a defensive problem.

While the goals have gone it at the top end, they have also been conceded as 44 have hit the back of their net in all competitions.

It has seen them linked with moves for defenders – including Real Madrid veteran Sergio Ramos.

The Spaniard, who has made 668 appearances for Los Blancos and won 22 major honours for the club, is out of contract this summer.

Partnering with captain Harry Maguire, the report states he would be seen as a “useful stop-gap signing” which would bring experience to the defence.

And there appears to be interest from the 34-year-old’s side as they have reportedly rejected an approach from PSG, preferring the Premier League.

But he will be demanding as the World Cup-winner is expected to earn a weekly wage of £200,000, having turned down a new deal at Madrid when they demanded he take a 10 per cent pay cut.

Ramos has spent all but one year of his senior professional career with Madrid, arriving from Sevilla in 2005.

He has captained both club and country, helping them to consecutive Euro titles in 2008 and 2012 as well as World Cup in South Africa between them.

It comes as United had stepped back from a move for RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano - hours before Bayern Munich confirmed a deal.
