Ligue 1 club Lorient have tragically had a member of their staff killed after a lighting structure fell on him.
Immediately after their match on Sunday evening against Rennes, the large structure fell from above and crushed the staff member.
Medical staff and firemen tried to rescue the man who was initially left in a critical condition.
But those at the Moustoir Stadium were unable to save the man who sadly died.
Away side Rennes won the game 3-0 before the horror incident after the final whistle.
Football fans from across the world sent their condolences on social media upon hearing the terrible news.
One wrote on Twitter: “Sincere condolences may he rest in peace”.
And another echoed people’s thoughts by posting: “Terrible news, Rest in Peace.”
An investigation into how the structure fell is expected to take place in what was a truly unique and heartbreaking way for the staff member to lose his life.
The groundsman was said to be tending to the grass as part of his post-match duties.
And the lighting falling on him was simply a most unfortunate accident that he was stood underneath at the time.
Canal Plus France say the impact provoked a cardiac arrest.
And the Lorient employee needed automated external defibrillator treatment to save his life.
He was rushed from the 16,000-seater stadium to intensive care at a local hospital and put on a life support system, but he sadly died on Sunday evening.
