Ajax footballer Quincy Promes has reportedly been arrested by police in the Netherlands over a serious stabbing incident.

The Dutchman, 28, was taken into custody on Sunday morning regarding an incident that took place in late July in Abcoude, a city south of the outskirts of Amsterdam.

Promes is suspected of assault, resulting in serious physical injuries, according to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf.

The offence in question carries a four-year jail term if the accused is found guilty - and a magistrate will this afternoon decide if the suspect will be brought to trial.

Promes is said to have injured a family member on the night in question - and the arrest was confirmed on Sunday morning by police spokesman Jelmer Geerds.

The statement read that a 28-year male had been arrested in connection with the stabbing incident.

However, Geerds has been forced to deny that Promes' delayed arrest was due to Ajax's footballing schedule in recent months or due to the player's status.

“We only heard about the incident a month ago. An investigation was then started and this morning led to an arrest, ”said Geerds.

The police also said they were looking for a suitable moment to make the arrest.

Promes featured in Ajax's 4-0 win over PEC Zwolle on Saturday afternoon, with the attacker scoring in the 11th minute.

But the former Sevilla star is today in jail, where he could be kept for the next three or four days before being released.

Promes has been an Ajax player since 2019 and made his Dutch national team debut in 2014.

The wide man was linked with a move to English side Southampton in the summer but stayed at the Eredivisie club.

Promes has featured 28 times for the Dutch outfit, scoring 15 goals.
