The alleged incident is said to have taken place at his home in October and the Premier League player has been released but the police investigation is ongoing
A Premier League footballer is being investigated by police over an alleged incident at his home last month.
The anonymous player in question was arrested on Wednesday morning on suspicion of rape and false imprisonment.
An investigation into the alleged October incident is ongoing, with police continuing their enquiries.
The footballer in England’s top flight has been released since his arrest earlier this week.
In a statement to the Daily Mail sent on Thursday, police confirmed: “He has since been released under investigation pending further enquiries.”
A warrant had been executed at the address of the player by police officers.
In addition to the arrest, the footballer involved was fined for breaking Covid-19 regulations.
The woman was also fined by police officers for the same offence relating to coronavirus in the UK.
Premier League football, meanwhile, continues after the international break despite the national lockdown in England.
All games are set to be televised with fans still unable to attend matches.
Pay-per-view football is poised to be scrapped for the rest of 2020, though, meaning some games should be shown on free-to-air TV.
The Premier League are still in discussions with broadcasters over their approach after the November international break.
