Roman Abramovich has blocked Chelsea’s move for Juventus outcast Paulo Dybala to protect new signings Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech, according to reports in Italy.
The Blues spent close to £250million in the summer and autumn window, with Frank Lampard given significant financial backing after being prevented from strengthening his squad last season by their transfer embargo.
Highly-rated striker Timo Werner completed a £54million switch from RB Leipzig, left-back Ben Chilwell arrived in a £50million move from Leicester and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy joined from Rennes in a deal worth £22million.
Thiago Silva also signed for Lampard’s side on a free transfer after departing Paris St-Germain at the end of August.
However, Chelsea’s most creative additions of the recent window were Havertz (£72million) and Ziyech (£36million) - who are both capable of operating in attacking midfield, central midfield or out wide.
And according to Italian outlet Calciomercato, Blues chief Abramovich has no intention of funding a move for Dybala after recently spending £106million on the pair.
Dybala has fallen out of favour under new Juve boss Andrea Pirlo, racking up just two appearances in Serie A so far this season.
Recent reports have suggested that Chelsea are eyeing up a deal for 26-year-old, who has less than two years remaining on his current contract in Turin.
Nevertheless, Abramovich’s trusted men have reportedly received a ‘clear guidance’ not to sign another attacking midfielder or second striker.
The Russian is keen to protect the investment made on Havertz and Ziyech, with Dybala’s potential arrival likely to reduce their game time at Stamford Bridge.
Havertz has got off to a mixed start so far in west London, registering just one goal in seven Premier League appearances so far.
The 21-year-old did score a hat-trick in their 6-0 Carabao Cup win over Barnsley, but on the whole he has failed to impress since his big-money move.
Ziyech, on the other hand, produced a man-of-the-match display in last weekend’s 3-0 win away at Burnley and also got on the scoresheet in his first start against Krasnodar last Wednesday.
