An inconclusive positive COVID-19 result in the Real Madrid squad

Zinedine Zidane has been dealt a blow ahead of Real Madrid's Champions League match with Inter on Tuesday as a first-team player at the club has tested positive for COVID-19.

UEFA's protocol states that if this player does not test negative in a second test that Real Madrid can submit to the confederation six hours before the match, they cannot play.

UEFA require PCR tests to be carried out a day or two before every Champions League match, but this positive result means that Real Madrid are already carrying out more tests to see if there are any more cases in the squad.

The antigens were detected by the tests, which led to the other tests being carried out to rule out more cases. No more positives have been detected.

During Sunday afternoon, a second test will be carried out on the affected player to find out if what has been detected is, in fact, a case of COVID-19 or if it is a false alarm, as was the case with Martin Odegaard earlier in the season.

This problem adds to everything that Zidane is trying to juggle, particularly in the right-back position. Dani Carvajal and Nacho Fernandez are still a way off being able to play, while Alvaro Odriozola has just resumed training and Lucas Vazquez, who has been filling in as a makeshift right-back, suffered a muscle injury against Huesca.

In the case of Lucas, however, Real Madrid are moderately optimistic that he will be able to play against Inter.

Los Blancos need to beat the Nerazzurri to get their Champions League campaign back on track, having lost to Shakhtar Donetsk and drawn away to Borussia Monchengladbach in their opening two matches of the group stage.

It is necessary to remember that Castilla have not been able to play their game in this matchday in the Segunda B after three positive COVID-19 tests were detected in Raul Gonzalez's squad.
