Chelsea are closing in on Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and a transfer could be sealed soon with the Ligue 1 star waiting to head for London once he gets the green light

Chelsea are edging ever closer to the signing of Edouard Mendy, and the Rennes goalkeeper is waiting to make the switch.

Frank Lampard is keen to bring in competition for Kepa Arrizabalaga at Stamford Bridge.

While the Blues boss gave his backing to the Spaniard after his performance against Brighton on Monday night, it is no secret the manager wants a new No.1.

Keep has been a failure between the sticks since arriving for £72m, and Mendy is set to replace him in goal.

A deal still needs to be agreed with Ligue 1 side Rennes, with a figure of around £18m expected to get a transfer done.

Chelsea have already spent over £200m this summer, and they are still looking to strengthen before the window shuts.

Mendy is keen to make the move happen as soon as possible it seems, with Chelsea gearing up to play Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday (4.30pm).

According to French journalist Mohamed Bouhafsi, the 28-year-old is ready and waiting to fly to London.

Mendy is holding off on travelling until he gets the green light to do so.

Chelsea have already agreed a five-year contract with him ahead of his proposed transfer.

The Blues won’t have any issues over personal terms as a result once a deal with Rennes is agreed.

A transfer is expected to go through, but Lampard did back his current keeper last night by saying: “I am very happy with Kepa.

"With the shot I’m not sure if he could’ve done any better. But I saw a bit more confidence in how he was playing. Kepa is here, he’s our keeper and I’m happy with him.

"If we are bringing in competition, it will be competition. That’s the nature of Chelsea and it goes throughout the squad.”
