Dani Ceballos is reportedly on the verge of sealing a return to Arsenal after they made a breakthrough in their talks with Real Madrid.

The Spanish midfielder spent last season with the Gunners and was a key figure in midfield alongside Granit Xhaka following the enforced break for coronavirus.

Ceballos remains keen to be a success at Madrid but has been unable to break into Zinedine Zidane's plans.

That has allowed Mikel Arteta to convince the Arsenal board to pursue a deal to bring the 24-year-old back to the Emirates.

And according to Spanish outlet La Sexta, Arsenal are closing in on another loan for Ceballos.

It is claimed Arteta convinced Ceballos to reject three other offers and rejoin Arsenal for the 2020/21 season.

Speaking last week, Arteta opened up about the ongoing talks with Real Madrid.

“Well, we have had some talks [on Ceballos]," Arteta said.

"Dani knows really well what I think about him – he was pretty clear with me as well that his intention was to remain with us.

“But obviously Real Madrid are involved and we don't know yet what they want to to do with the player.

"Obviously he is a player we are interested in because we really saw in the last months of the season what he is capable of bringing to us.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal have announced the departure of Henrikh Mkhitaryan to Roma on a permanent deal.

The Armenia international spent last season with the Italian side and leaves after his contract was terminated by mutual consent.

Mkhitaryan said: "I’m delighted to announce that I have permanently joined the #giallorossi.

"Firstly, I would like to thank @arsenal, its personnel and the millions of #gunners, all whom supported me over the past year and a half. A special thanks goes to Arsene Wenger for having brought me to the club and for his trust in me.

"Now the preparation begins with my new challenge and my second year adventure in @seriea.

"I love the city of #roma, I love this club and I count the fans in my heart. I will give all of my effort in helping us achieve our goals."
