JACK Charlton has died aged 85.

England World Cup hero Jack Charlton has tragically passed away aged 85. The Leeds United legend passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, his family have confirmed. Charlton had been suffering from a long-term illness.

His family said in a statement: "Jack died peacefully on Friday 10 July at the age of 85.

"He was at home in Northumberland, with his family by his side.

"As well as a friend to many, he was a much-adored husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

"We cannot express how proud we are of the extraordinary life he led and the pleasure he brought to so many people in different countries and from all walks of life.

"His loss will leave a huge hole in all our lives but we are thankful for a lifetime of happy memories."

Charlton was part of England's World Cup winning squad in 1966 alongside his brother Bobby.

He won 35 England caps and played in every match during the 1966 World Cup.

The former defender also made a staggering 773 appearances for Leeds during his 23-year playing career.

Charlton also had success as a manager, leading the Republic of Ireland to two World Cups and a European Championships during is spell in charge.

Tributes poured in for Charlton after the news emerged on Saturday morning.

England's official Twitter account wrote: "We are devastated by the news that Jack Charlton, a member of our World Cup-winning team of 1966, has passed away.

"Our deepest sympathies are with Jack’s family, friends and former clubs."

Leeds star Liam Cooper added: "A very sad day. Rest in Peace Jack Charlton."

The Republic of Ireland's official Twitter account posted: "The FAI is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Jack Charlton, the manager who changed Irish football forever.

"Our thoughts are with Pat and the family at this sad time. #RIP."

Match of the Day host Gary Lineker said: "Saddened to hear that Jack Charlton has passed away. World Cup winner with England, manager of probably the best ever Ireland side and a wonderfully infectious personality to boot. RIP Jack."

Ex-Liverpool and Aston Villa ace Stan Collymore wrote on Twitter: "A legend in England. A legend in Ireland.

"Rest in Peace, Big Jack. May the lake be tranquil and the fish be plentiful."

"Absolutely gutted. Father figure to me for 10 years, thanks for having faith in me. Sleep well Jack, Love ya," former Ireland defender Paul McGrath said.

"Thinking of Pat, John and Peter at this sad time Green heart Flag of Ireland Shamrock #thanksforthememories."

Former Premier League ace Jan Aage Fjortoft added: "Jack Charlton is dead. Sometimes we are using the word Legend too often.

"But big Jack WAS a Legend. World Cup winner 66. At Leeds United whole!!! his career. Did wonders with Ireland. Rest In Peace you giant."
