Thiago Alcantara wants to leave Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says Bayern Munich star Thiago Alcantara is a player he likes amid speculation the Spanish midfielder's next move could be to Anfield. The 29-year-old has a year left on his contract with the Bundesliga giants and appears to want out from the Allianz Arena for a fresh challenge.

And Liverpool are among the clubs that are said to be looking at Thiago to bolster their Premier League title-winning squad.

Following Liverpool's 2-0 win over Aston Villa, Klopp was asked whether there was any truth in the rumours linking Thiago with the Reds.

And although Klopp was hesitant to discuss Thiago, he made clear he was a fan.

He said: "Would you be surprised if I didn't answer? He's a good player I like a lot but like many others out there."

This week, Bayern chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge insisted Thiago would be sold if a new deal was not agreed upon.

But after winning the German Cup on Saturday, manager Hansi Flick said he was still hopeful of keeping hold of the former Barcelona playmaker.

"The thing is, I always have hope. I'm actually always very positive about things," he said.

"I also know, of course, that when you're at a certain age and you've already played in the Spanish league with Barcelona and in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich, you feel the need to experience another big league. That is quite normal and that is also human.

"I'm trying my best to make sure Thiago stays here and that you can convince him to stay. But that's one thing that time will show.

"We still have the Champions League ahead of us now and we have a lot of plans, also together with him."

Meanwhile, former Liverpool player Steve Nicol thinks that despite Thiago's qualities, he wouldn't be a major improvement on what Liverpool already.

"The guy is a quality player, there’s no question about that," Nicol told ESPN.

"He can pass the ball and the one think Liverpool could maybe improve is having that midfielder, a bit like Xabi Alonso, to pick players out.

"But the truth is that would mean you’re changing your style a little bit.

"So I wonder whether if it’s a chance to sign a great player and keep the squad strong, because if there’s one thing Liverpool have it’s competition in the middle of the park.

"Yes, he’s a great player, but I’m not sure he makes the team better though. Do you really want to touch something that isn’t broken?

"Liverpool are very dynamic and Thiago is more of an old-school footballer. He’s a great player and you need a squad, but is he pushing the starting XI? I don’t think so."
