Ex-England star Sol Campbell has been blasted for suggesting coronavirus is man-made and “designed” to kill certain types of people
The former Arsenal and Spurs defender questioned whether it “deliberately attacks” certain individuals.
The 45-year-old shared an article about official figures showing that black people are up to four times more likely to die from Covid-19 than white people.
But he linked it to a conspiracy theory, which has been debunked, that the virus originated from a lab.
Sol Campbell made the controversial claim on social media.
Campbell tweeted: “Was this virus a natural mistake or a designed mistake...?
“I wonder does this virus deliberately attacks a certain blood type….?”
But he was met with a huge backlash online.
Fans labelled him a “complete buffoon”.
Some even compared Sol, manager of Southend United, to notorious conspiracy theorist David Icke.
One said: “Let’s wait until the scientists give us the detail behind the stats. Don’t be so irresponsible.”
Another wrote: “Is there nothing you will not turn into a racism debate?”
And one said: “David Icke rolls the ball out to Sol Campbell, who has plenty of space.” Scientists have said there is “no credible evidence” the virus was man-made.
Experts found increased mortality rates due to Covid-19 in all ethnic minority groups except for Chinese women.
But they say all the causes of this “are still to be identified”.
