Chelsea chiefs wanted to sign Jadon Sancho but Frank Lampard didn't.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard did not want Jadon Sancho to be his first signing as the club's head coach, says transfer expert Duncan Castles. Lampard was unable to make signings in his first window in charge of Chelsea last summer due to the club's transfer ban. However, the Blues had their ban halved in December, allowing them to spend again in January.
Lampard made it clear he wanted to bring in a striker to help lessen the load on top-scorer Tammy Abraham.
However, Castles says Chelsea chiefs wanted to sign winger Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.
But Lampard did not want to splash out on the 20-year-old as he already thought he had enough players in Sancho's position.
"Chelsea, as we told you on the podcast, were very interested in signing the player in January," Castles said on the Transfer Window podcast.
"Frank Lampard did not think that was the right way to spend the club's money and didn't want to be associated with his first major transfer fee being for a player in a position that he's already well covered for, so that didn't happen."
Sancho scored 14 goals and assisted 15 in the Bundesliga before the season was halted due to the coronavirus last month.
Manchester United are keen on signing the England international when the next transfer window opens.
Castles believes the Premier League is the only realistic destination for Sancho, with Dortmund wanting over £100million for him.
And he reckons United are in prime position out of any team to get him.
Castles added: "I think the only realistic option when you're talking about a €100m-plus transfer fee that Borussia Dortmund have been quoting for the player is that he goes to England because that's where the market is for a young, extremely talented England international, who's demanding substantial wages.
"So then you go through the other clubs.
"Liverpool like the player a lot, again they think the transfer fee and the wages involved are too high.
"So with their squad setup at present, it's not the right move for them.
"Manchester City had the player before, have been looking at other options, which puts Manchester United in a position where they have the money and are probably better insured against the pandemic in terms of the amount of cash that's in the club and the amount of revenue it generates each year, and they have the need."
