Real Madrid's ambitious plan: Haaland in 2020 and Mbappe in 2021

Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe are two of the top young attacking talents in world football and Real Madrid hope to have both of them at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu by the end of next summer's transfer window.

The directors at Real Madrid know that this will be a difficult double operation to pull off, but they are ambitious.

The plan is to sign Haaland this year and then Mbappe in 2021 and they have a roadmap to make those two acquisitions happen.

With Luka Jovic not working out as hoped, there is a need for a killer striker to join Karim Benzema in attack and Haaland's excellent return in front of goal this season has piqued Los Blancos' interest.

The Norwegian is a natural No.9, whereas Mbappe can play elsewhere in attack, and Haaland could be available this summer, whereas Mbappe won't be able to leave Paris Saint-Germain so soon, especially due to the complications posed by the coronavirus crisis.

Although Haaland only just arrived at his current club Borussia Dortmund in January and although his agent Mino Raiola has explained that the original plan was for the striker to stay at the Bundesliga club until at least 2021, his rapid maturity and the fact that he has a release clause of 75 million euros means that a summer move to Real Madrid is on the table.

The plan is for Haaland to be signed up this summer and then focus will turn to Mbappe in 2021, at which point he'll have just one year left on his PSG contract.

Jerome Rothen has revealed that Real Madrid were previously close to signing the Frenchman, but that the operation has been put on ice for now.

Mbappe hasn't shown signs of putting pen to paper on a new deal in the French capital, so Real Madrid know that PSG - a club with whom they have a good relationship - could feel the pressure to sell Mbappe in 2021 rather than let him leave for free in 2022.

From Mbappe's point of view, he has long expressed his admiration for Real Madrid and for Zinedine Zidane.

He could make a move to the Spanish capital in little over a year and he could find Haaland there to accompany him in attack when he does.

With Mbappe currently 21 years of age and Haaland 19, this would be an authoritative haul for Real Madrid and one that would set the club up for the future.
