The Old Trafford chief is hoping to take advantage of the Arsenal striker's contract running out and launch an audacious bid.

Gunners officials have accepted the fact Aubameyang will not sign a new deal and would prefer to cash in than lose him for nothing.

The Gabon striker, 30, has just over one year left on his current contract and can leave for a free in the summer of 2021, while being able to negotiate pre-contract terms in January.

Arsenal's head of football Raul Sanllehi and technical director Edu had wanted their £56million top-scorer to commit his long-term future to the club.

But now they may be tempted to recoup nearly all of what they paid for him in January 2018 after Man Utd registered an interest.

Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain are two other European giants preparing to swoop - and they can both offer Champions League football, a big reason Aubameyang has stalled on a deal.

Ever since losing Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere for nothing in the last few seasons, Sanllehi and managing director Vinai Venkatesham insisted they would never put themselves in a similar situation.

On the other hand, they are also determined to avoid a repeat of the scenario of two years ago, when Arsenal were panicked into awarding Mesut Ozil a £350,000-a-week deal.

The German playmaker, as well as Bukayo Saka, Shkodran Mustafi and Reiss Nelson, are all out of contract in 2021.

But there is not the same urgency to agree terms with those players as there is with club captain Aubameyang.
