Grimsby ran out 4-2 winners against Newport in a high-scoring League Two clash at Blundell Park.
Bradley Garmston, Josh Benson, James Hanson and Max Wright all scored for the hosts as they moved above the Exiles into 14th place.
The Mariners took the lead inside a minute when Garmston took full advantage of an error from Newport goalkeeper Tom King, who pushed an initial attempt from Charles Vernam straight into the defender’s path.
Newport hit back in the 10th minute through Jordan Green, who was allowed a clear run into the home penalty area before tapping into the net from close range.
Visiting striker Jamille Matt passed up a golden chance to make it 2-1 – and it proved to be a telling miss as Benson curled a free-kick into the corner at the other end.
The home side extended their lead shortly after the hour-mark courtesy of Hanson’s volley.
Padraig Amond pulled one back in the 68th minute to set up an exciting finish.
But the game was put to bed six minutes from time when Wright found the top corner with a deflected strike.
