Halifax’s seven-game unbeaten run in the Vanarama National League came to an end at Plainmoor as Torquay ran out 1-0 winners.
Torquay made a bright start but Armani Little and Ben Whitfield were narrowly off target as they pushed for an opener.
The Shaymen worked their way back into the match and came close to taking the lead themselves through Cameron King, who fired wide from 25 yards.
Gulls keeper Lucas Covolan Cavagnari then made a fingertip save to keep out Niall Maher’s header just after half-time.
Torquay broke the deadlock in the 68th minute when Ade Azeez nodded home a rebound from Sam Johnson’s save.
Halifax pushed for an equaliser late on but the defeat saw them drop out of the top three with 12 games remaining.
