Wycombe boost automatic promotion chances with rare away win at Bolton

Wycombe boosted their automatic promotion chances with a 2-0 victory at bottom club Bolton.

Defender Aristote Nsiala’s 44th-minute own goal set up Gareth Ainsworth’s side for their first league away win since beating Tranmere on November 17.

And when home goalkeeper Remi Matthews felled Fred Onyedinma – back from a four-month injury lay-off – Joe Jacobson netted his ninth goal of the season with the resulting 62nd-minute penalty.

Bolton, who are facing the drop to the fourth tier for the first time since 1988, enjoyed their brightest moments in the opening half.

Daryl Murphy and Ethan Hamilton saw long-range efforts saved by Ryan Allsop, though David Wheeler, Paul Smyth and Onyedinma replied for the visitors.

Wycombe were convinced they should have had a spot-kick when Murphy appeared to handle the ball in the box.

But they eventually made the breakthrough as a defensive mix-up saw Nsiala put Jason McCarthy’s cross into his own net.

And Wycombe completed their first league double over the Trotters when Jacobson sent Matthews the wrong way from 12 yards.

Wycombe sit third in the table, one point adrift of the top two.
