Jurgen Klopp is a big admirer of the Germany international.

Liverpool are planning to swoop for RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner this summer, it’s been claimed. The Germany international has been on the Reds’ radar for some time now, with manager Jurgen Klopp a big admirer for the forward.

Late last month, it was reported Klopp was contemplating launching a £60million bid to acquire the striker’s services.

And according to German outlet Bild, the former Borussia Dortmund chief will indeed look to acquire his services after the culmination of the 2019-20 season.

They claim Klopp’s longstanding interest in the 23-year-old hasn’t waned and he’s willing to meet his £50million (€60million) release clause.

Bild also claim Liverpool enquired about signing the former Stuttgart hitman last summer but saw their approach rebuffed by Leipzig.

Leipzig responded to reports that their star man could join the Reds on Wednesday afternoon, jokingly tweeting: "We heard. He is headed towards Tottenham though."

Werner has been in sublime form for Leipzig this season, scoring 25 goals and providing 10 assists in 30 appearances.

His displays this campaign has impressed many, including Liverpool hero Steve McManaman.

McManaman, however, has his reservations about the Reds pursuing a big-money move for the forward, telling Horsingrace.net: “I think he’s a great goalscorer and his record proves that.

“Whether he’s the player that the other three at Liverpool are, with a footballing brain, then I don’t necessarily think he is.

“I don’t think he’s the type of player that will take people on and positionally move wide and things like that. I think he is a proper goalscorer.

“I do wonder if Liverpool are actually interested in him if I’m being honest. I don’t think he’s the type of player that Liverpool would go for at this moment.

“Is he a proven goalscorer? Yes he is. Would he get into the Liverpool team? Then I think that would be a different question.

“If you’re going to sign a proven goalscorer for a huge amount of money then he’d want to go right into the team? So that’s why I would question whether Liverpool are actually interested in Werner.”

Werner, who has scored 86 times in 144 appearances for Leipzig, signed a new deal with the Bundesliga side last August that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2023.

Werner and his Leipzig team-mates will be back in action on Saturday afternoon, welcoming Werder Bremen to the Red Bull Arena.

Liverpool, meanwhile, will travel to Carrow Road on Saturday afternoon take on relegation battlers Norwich City.
