Day denies Ipswich as Dons hold on for point

Goalkeeper Joe Day produced a series of fine saves as AFC Wimbledon held Ipswich to a goalless draw at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.

Neither side registered a shot on target in the first half, but Ipswich could have gone ahead after 41 minutes.

Emyr Huws saw his free-kick deflect wide of Day’s right-hand post. The resulting corner caused chaos and the ball sat up nicely for James Norwood, whose sweetly-struck volley thundered off the crossbar and bounced down in front of the line.

Norwood again went close after 56 minutes, with Day getting down well to parry the shot by the visitors’ top-scorer this season.

Norwood was denied once more midway through the second half when he latched on to a loose pass by Dons centre-back Rod McDonald, but Cardiff loanee Day was equal to it.

The hosts had a chance when Mitch Pinnock’s acrobatic effort was blocked at close range by James Wilson.

Day then did brilliantly to palm over Will Keane’s half-volley on the turn before tipping away Freddie Sears’ free-kick as both sides saw their winless runs stretch to four games.
