Manchester United are facing financial trouble if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.

Manchester United could be dealt with a significant financial blow if they don’t qualify for the Champions League at the end of the season. United are seventh in the Premier league table with six points separating them from the top four, which leads to Europe’s most esteemed competition.

The Red Devils haven’t managed to put together a convincing bid for Champions League qualification via the league and are in no way a standout favourite to win the Europa League.

According to Goal, the Manchester giants are facing a financial crisis if they still struggle to satisfy their sponsors’ contractual demands and performance expectations.

Certain sponsors are feeling like there is very little to gain from a club without silverware or Champions League football, even though it still generates revenue.

Missing out on qualification for next season’s Champions League would lead to United taking an immediate £20million hit from clauses in their Adidas deal.

Other contracts worth hundreds of millions are coming up for renewal in the coming years and there are other more successful clubs that would gladly take them from the Premier league giants.

Findings from Deloitte’s yearly Football Money League report also show that there will be a decline in forecasted revenue to around £560-580m, which is down from last year's £627m, if they don’t make it to Europe’s most popular club competition for the second campaign in a row.

United’s wage bill is the most expensive in league history at £232m a year and a lot of the money goes to players who are either underperforming or out on loan.

Marcos Rojo is making more than £140,000 per week and is now playing on loan for Estudiantes and the Red Devils are splashing a whopping £200,000 per week for Inter Milan loanee Alexis Sanchez.

But despite the immense wage bill the Red Devils have struggled to attract some key targets during the January transfer window, with the exception of Bruno Fernandes.

Solskjaer was rigorously looking for a striker to fill in for the injured Marcus Rashford, who will be sidelined until April with a double stress fracture to his back.

The Norwegian boss kept tabs on the likes of Erling Braut Haaland, Timo Werner and Edinson Cavani and instead landed odion Ighalo on deadline day.

The highest paid squad usually performs better than its rivals and United’s situation is testament to the club’s unprecedented slump.

Solskjaer’s men will look to narrow the gap from the top four on February 17 when they take on fourth-placed Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
