Substitute Tyler Smith lifts Rochdale to victory over Shrewsbury

Tyler Smith came off the bench to net an 88th-minute winner for Rochdale in a closely-fought 1-0 victory against Shrewsbury.
Visitors Shrewsbury had the better of the first-half openings and it took a superb block from Eoghan O’Connell to prevent Conor McAleny from capitalising on a loose pass from Rhys Norrington-Davies, while Donald Love saw an angled drive parried by Robert Sanchez.
The clearest chance of the half came when Josh Laurent broke forward through the centre and Shrewsbury had a four-on-three scenario. Laurent opted for a pass to Jason Cummings, who had just Sanchez to beat but was foiled by the outstretched leg of the goalkeeper.
Dale came close on the hour mark when Aaron Morley’s corner was flicked on by Aaron Wilbraham but headed over by Ian Henderson from close range.
Sanchez flew down to his right to keep out a snapshot from Callum Lang but the spoils went Rochdale’s way when, in the 88th minute, Henderson hit the crossbar with a floated shot from 20 yards, with Smith reacting quickest to seize on the rebound and fire home from close range.
