Chelsea are set to make a last-ditch attempt to sign Dries Mertens from Napoli.

Chelsea are going to make an offer to Napoli for striker Dries Mertens that the Italian club cannot refuse, it has been claimed. The Blues will go into deadline day with the aim of making Mertens their newest recruit.

But Chelsea have already had an attempt to sign Mertens pushed back by Napoli.

Frank Lampard’s side are said to have bid £5m for the Belgian, but Napoli want close to £15millio, while the option of a loan has also been discussed.

And according to the Mirror, Chelsea will put in an offer on deadline day which will be too hard for Napoli to think about turning down.

Chelsea have been in the market for a striker throughout all of January but have yet to find their man.

They’ve been linked with Edinson Cavani as well as Krzysztof Piatek, but the former still stay at PSG while the latter is joining Hertha Berlin.

That’s left Mertens as Chelsea’s likely last hope.

The Blues have somewhat of a striker crisis to deal with as Tammy Abraham is injured while Olivier Giroud’s future is unclear.

The Frenchman could yet move to Lazio or Inter Milan - two clubs who have been linked heavily with the former Arsenal man in the last few days.

Lampard spoke last week of his efforts to sign a striker and stated that the hierarchy at the club needed to get their recruitment spot on before the window shuts.

"My job is to work every day on the training ground to make the players better," he said.

"The other part is looking at how we can move forward by bringing in players.

"We lost ground last summer and we need to make moves now to take us forward.

"I have a strong feeling of where we can improve personnel-wise to take us forward.

"So for me it’s clear. The money of it is not my job but I have to be honest and truthful.

“Short-term recruitment is something we have to get right."

Chelsea have yet to sign a player since Lampard took over because of a FIFA transfer ban, which was ultimately lifted in November.
