Ainley salvages point for Crewe

Callum Ainley’s stoppage-time goal rescued a 1-1 draw for Crewe at struggling Macclesfield.
Paul Green’s own goal late in the first half separated the two, with the struggling hosts forced into a valiant rearguard action in the second period.
Though the game saw third-bottom hosting third in League Two, it was difficult to tell which was which before the break.
Macclesfield went close with a fierce drive from Connor Kirby, Crewe’s Will Jaaskelainen just about getting enough in the way.
But the keeper could do nothing when the deadlock was broken, as Green reached Theo Archibald’s hopeful ball but could only nudge it past him with just enough pace to nestle in the bottom corner of the goal.
The visitors were by far the better team in the second half but failed to break down Macclesfield’s often desperate defence.
They went agonisingly close, with Perry Ng prodding Tommy Lowery’s cross wide from six yards and Ainley heading narrowly over, but in the fifth minute of stoppage time Ainley finally forced the ball in at a goalmouth scramble.
