Derek Adams insists Morecambe were better side despite Northampton loss

Morecambe manager Derek Adams insisted his side were the ‘better team’ despite their 4-1 defeat to Northampton on Saturday.

The Shrimps defied their lowly league position with a strong first-half performance at Sixfields but poor finishing in front of goal was punished by the home side.

Paul Anderson’s cross deceived goalkeeper Mark Halstead to open the scoring before Ryan Watson made it 2-0 in first half stoppage-time.

Nicky Adams extended the lead early in the second half and, after Adam Phillips pulled one back, Chris Lines’ thumping volley put the gloss on an excellent victory for the Cobblers, who are back in the play-off positions.

Morecambe, meanwhile, have dropped to the foot of the division, however Adams was encouraged by their performance on Saturday.

“Obviously the scoreline flatters Northampton and anybody at the game would say that,” he said.

“We did really well in the first half and created two very good opportunities when we should have scored but didn’t take them and then they score their first.

“It’s against the run of play and we feel it wasn’t a free-kick at the time but they get a corner off it and then we didn’t defend well enough.

“We conceded a really poor second goal in injury-time and that set us back hugely.

“We still came out well in the second half and had a real go at it and created chances but we haven’t been able to score when we were on top in the game.

“Those are the small margins in football and we’ve got to take our opportunities when they come along.

“We were the better side over the 90 minutes and when it went to 4-1, Northampton were able to get the better of us but, before that, we were the team in the ascendancy and creating more opportunities. ”

Northampton manager Keith Curle said: “We were clinical. The goals were all scored from midfielders and that shows we’re all chipping in, which is important.

“I think, under Derek, Morecambe have recruited very well and they’ve got good dynamics in their side and they will cause teams problems.

“They came here with confidence from their win over Port Vale in midweek but it’s important for us to have the likes of Nicky Adams and Paul Anderson scoring goals and being a goal threat.

“That’s the only criticism of those players but they both got on the scoresheet today.

“We’ve created the right environment at the club and the best thing we can do is leave it and let it grow and the less time you need to spend in the changing room as a manager, the better the changing room you’ve got.

“The supporters also play a massive part and Tuesday is now our sole focus because that’s another opportunity to get three points.”
