Swindon can improve on Crewe performance, says Wellens

Swindon boss Richie Wellens insisted his side were capable of better despite claiming a 3-1 win against Crewe on Saturday.

Rob Hunt, Jerry Yates and Danny Rose all found the net for the Sky Bet League Two leaders, with Chuma Anene on target for Crewe with a goal that made it 1-1 just after the hour mark.

But Wellens said there was still room for improvement.

“The result was the most important thing,” he said. “I thought we took the goals really well, we were ruthless in our chances, but we didn’t really have many.

“Will we play better? Yes, but we were dogged, determined and limited them to two shots on target. I’m really pleased with the performance and the result.

“I’m really pleased with the energy and in the last 15 minutes Crewe didn’t really cause us many problems.

“We’ve got different ways that we can win. I think we’ve showed that on a couple of occasions this season.

“It was never going to be pretty – the pitch is a bit bobbly and we were obviously aware of the wind before kick-off, that dictates the way that you play sometimes.

“Me more than anyone wants to turn up here and play free-flowing football, but because we haven’t had much chance to work on it, sometimes you have to go with your gut and change it.”

Crewe boss David Artell was not impressed by his side’s display.

“We did not play very well today, we only have ourselves to blame, we should have done far better in the second half, but too many of us were below par and you can’t do that at the team top of the league,” he said.

“Credit to Swindon, they are hard to beat here, they are top of the table for a reason, but we are more bothered about how we played and we didn’t play well today.

“They had one good chance in the first half at the back post and then they scored from long range, but it didn’t reflect the first half. We should have been more ruthless in the final third and we were not.

“It is disappointing we did not get going in the second half and it has cost us in the end.

“It is not terminal, but we don’t like losing games of football, so we’ll lick our wounds and move on.

“We don’t need to throw the baby out with the bath water or reinvent the wheel, we just need to instil a bit of belief. We have to make sure they don’t worry too much, get back to basics. We are a good team.”
