Paul Lambert happy to see ‘clinical’ Ipswich return to winning ways

Ipswich manager Paul Lambert felt his side was clinical in their 4-1 Sky Bet League One victory over Accrington at Portman Road.

Kayden Jackson (12), James Norwood (29), Alan Judge (44) and Will Keane (90) were on target for Town with Offrande Zanzala converting a penalty for the visitors in the 86th minute.

It was a first win for Ipswich in League One in nine matches and moved them up to third, three points behind new leaders Rotherham with a game in hand.

Lambert said: “The first half was excellent and it could have been five or six. Even the games we have lost or drawn we have had most of the ball, most of the game, most of the chances so it was just the intensity, it was a good win.

“We have dominated games before and without getting the breaks and we were clinical today that was the difference.

“I am happy with the support, the football club is in a really good place, we are three points off the top with a game in hand, it’s a bloody good position to be.

“I do not want to play silky football and lose. Accrington were on really good form and we knew it was going to be a hard game but the level we played today was really, really good.”

Meanwhile, Coleman apologised to his fans saying his side was “absolutely diabolical” in the first half.

“There’s no excuse for a lacklustre performance. We showed no energy, no fight, Ipswich wiped the floor with us. We didn’t pass, we didn’t close down, we didn’t challenge, we looked devoid of ideas, we were awful.

“I’m in charge of the team so I have to take the blame. We were a bit better in the second half.

“Even at 2-0 we could have gone in and regrouped for the second half but we gave them another one. We made a game of it in the second half, we pinned them back but it could have been six or seven in the first half.

“You have to take your hat off to Ipswich, they were very good.”
