Wellens welcomes Boxing Day boost after giving Swindon players Christmas off

Richie Wellens gave his Swindon players Christmas Day off and was rewarded with an emphatic 4-0 thrashing of Cambridge.

Keshi Anderson bagged a hat-trick to add to Eoin Doyle’s 15th goal in 11 games as the Sky Bet League Two leaders cruised to victory at the County Ground.

Manager Wellens said: “We played really well in the final third and when we got what we wanted to do right, we looked like we could create chances a lot.

“We made it difficult against Cambridge, who are brave and can be a threat. All in all, a really good team performance.

“We gave them Christmas Day off and they’ve come out and put in a really good performance on Boxing Day.

“If you look at our forward players in the last eight or nine games: Eoin Doyle’s scoring a lot of goals but Jerry Yates is a goal threat, Keshi Anderson is a goal threat, Kaiyne Woolery is a goal threat and Michael Doughty is a goal threat.

“We’ve got a lot of attacking options and Anthony Grant in midfield holds it all together.”

Doyle slotted home his 21st of the season by converting a fifth-minute penalty.

Anderson got his first of the afternoon in the 40th minute after an exquisite move by the hosts.

Paul Caddis lofted the ball to Woolery and he nodded it into the path of Anderson, who dinked the ball past Dimitar Mitov to make it 2-0.

In first-half stoppage time Anderson made it 3-0 with a more individual effort, but no less impressive, as he pulled the trigger from range and his strike flew into the back of the net from a long way out, leaving Mitov motionless.

Anderson completed his hat-trick on 66 minutes by tucking into an open goal after Cambridge could only block a low Doyle cross into the path of Swindon’s three-goal hero.

Cambridge manager Colin Calderwood said: “We made simple mistakes and lost possession to ourselves.

“To be behind to the penalty decision was horrible.

“We felt sorry for ourselves but they were very incisive and quick, but I felt one or two players switched off.

“I think the penalty is a nonsense of a decision that gives them the start they don’t require because of the form they are in.

“We didn’t influence the game as if it was 0-0, which you want to do irrespective of the score.

“In any of the goals, we’ve got more men than them behind the ball. Apart from the goals, they haven’t hit the target.

“I’m annoyed about our level and that’s the most important thing – our level just died. It’s a lack of belief.”
