Glyn Hodges impressed by AFC Wimbledon response

AFC Wimbledon manager Glyn Hodges was delighted with his side’s second-half response after they came from a goal down to beat Doncaster 2-1 at Kingsmeadow.

Marcus Forss was at the heart of the action, slamming home a penalty after being brought down by Donervon Daniels before chasing a hopeful ball over the top, beating Brad Halliday to the bounce and playing in Callum Reilly to slot home the winner.

However, the visitors went into the break ahead through Kwame Thomas and Hodges was unhappy with the first 45 minutes.

“The first half was unrecognisable. We didn’t do what we set out to do. We spoke about a couple of things at half-time, they understood and carried it out in the second half.”

The way Forss chased down Halliday for the second goal epitomised the turnaround after the break.

“That was maybe the difference between the two halves. I don’t think we were as determined and they probably won a few more challenges than we did in the first half.

“The best thing about that goal is where Callum’s run from. He was in our box. The energy and the attitude he showed to get there was fantastic.”

Hodges was also pleased with the way his side saw the game out, especially given their tendency to let in late goals, mostly recently against Bolton.

“We’ve done bits and pieces on the training ground and spoken about it, so it was pleasing that we got the ball into the far corner. We went about it differently to last week.”

Doncaster boss Darren Moore was understandably downbeat after a game in which they enjoyed 66 per cent possession and had 20 shots as the defeat extends their winless run in the league to four matches.

Moore said: “We could have gone in more than 1-0 up based on our chances. It wasn’t to be and the second half it was a bit of a scrappy affair. We’re bitterly disappointed with the two goals we gave away. We didn’t capitalise on the chances we had and didn’t see the game out.

“We’ve given them two goals, they’ve not earned them. We spoke at half-time about not allowing complacency to set in, staying on the front foot and applying ourselves to the levels of the first half, if not more.

“The penalty gave them a little ray of hope, but even at 1-1, we were in the ascendancy. I didn’t think they were able to engage. Apart from the two chances they had, I cannot remember Seny Dieng having any other saves or hairy moments in the game. I’m a bit upset.”
