Jordan Maguire-Drew’s first-half equaliser secured a point for Leyton Orient in a 1-1 draw at Oldham.
Maguire-Drew bundled home from close range in the 25th minute, after his initial shot when connecting with Lee Angol’s low cross from the right flank had been saved by Oldham goalkeeper Zeus De La Paz.
Oldham, who entered the contest a point and a place adrift of Orient in 20th, enjoyed the perfect start.
Livewire on-loan winger Jonny Smith nodded the ball in behind the visiting defence in the second minute, racing into the penalty area before composing himself to calmly slot the ball into the bottom-right corner of Sam Sargeant’s net to claim his fifth goal of the season.
In the second half, as the hosts pressed for a winner, Oldham’s debutant midfielder David Jones forced Sargeant into a sharp low save to his right.
Home substitute Filipe Morais flashed a shot narrowly wide and in the 88th minute, Jones was unlucky to see his 20-yard free-kick cannon off the far post the post as Orient clung on.
