A stoppage-time goal from Harry Pell snatched Colchester a dramatic 1-0 win over Salford.
Pell nodded in from Frank Nouble’s flick-on in the third minute of time added on to secure victory for the hosts.
Courtney Senior’s first-time shot flew wide early on for Colchester.
And although Lois Maynard’s long-range effort deflected into the arms of Dean Gerken for Salford, it was the U’s who looked the more dangerous.
Cohen Bramall’s 25-yard free-kick dipped just over for Colchester who finished the first half strongly, with Salford keeper Chris Neal denying both Kwame Poku and Brandon Comley before the break.
Colchester finished the first half strongly but Richie Towell slotted a good chance wide from the edge of the area just after the break, following some sloppy play by the hosts.
And Salford had an effort ruled out for offside midway through the second half when Luke Armstrong converted from an offside position after Gerken had denied Towell.
Luke Norris went close late on for Colchester before Pell won it.
