Pope inspires Vale in FA Cup win

Tom Pope scored an eight-minute hat-trick to fire Port Vale into the third round of the FA Cup with a 3-1 win at Cheltenham.
The home side dominated the first half after taking an early lead through Reuben Reid’s third-minute penalty, after Sean Long was tripped by Cristian Montano.
Reid and Alex Addai both had clear chances to make it 2-0 but they could not find another before the break and they were made to pay in the second half.
Pope fired into the side netting after a cross was fumbled by Scott Flinders in the 47th minute and though Town’s Chris Hussey headed wide from Jake Doyle-Hayes’ cross, it was all Vale and they deservedly levelled after an hour.
Pope headed Rhys Browne’s cross past Flinders and two minutes later the big striker was powering another header past the Robins goalkeeper, this time from James Gibbons’ centre.
And Pope made it three goals in eight minutes when he thumped in after Cheltenham failed to deal with a corner.
