Former Arsenal manager Unai Emery has sent Gunners fans a classy message, insisting that it was an honour to coach the team, after he was sacked by the Emirates Stadium hierarchy on Friday.

Arsenal's former manager Unai Emery has released a statement, after he was sacked by Emirates Stadium chiefs on Friday morning. The Spaniard said he was extremely lucky to be at the club, and he wished the Gunners good luck moving forward.

Emery said that he was disappointed not to have been more successful as Arsenal manager, and wanted to achieve more for the fans.

He also highlighted Ivan Gazidis for his role in welcoming him to the Arsenal family, after he was appointed in the summer of 2018.

Emery urged the fans to get behind the players going forward.

The former manager insisted that the squad were highly professional, and that they all honoured the shirt, during his time in charge.

"It has been an honour to be the Arsenal head coach," read a statement from Emery, which was posted on Arsenal's website.

"To all the fans, I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for helping me to understand and feel the greatness of Arsenal.

"To all of you who have supported us from every corner of the globe, all of you who have come to the Emirates, all of you who have waited in the rain and cold just to greet me after a game. I want to tell all of you that I have worked with passion, with commitment and with effort.

"I would have liked nothing more than to have achieved better results for you.

"I also want to send a message of gratitude to all Arsenal employees for the way they have treated me. The greatness of Arsenal is in every director, executive, employee, assistant and volunteer.

"In particular, I want to highlight Ivan Gazidis, who welcomed me to the club, and Raul Sanllehi, Edu and Vinai Venkatesham for their respect, companionship and help.

"Until the very last minute I have been treated with honour and honesty. And of course, I send my sincere gratitude to the Kroenke family, for their trust.

"It has been a year and a half full of emotions, of great moments and some other more bitter ones, but not a single day has gone by without me stopping to think about how lucky I have been to work for this club with these players and their professional and personal qualities.

"They have always honoured the shirt they wear. They deserve your support.

"I had already experienced a lot in football, but I have enjoyed and learned a lot in England, in the Premier League, about respect for professionals and about the purity of football.

"My best wishes always.

"COYG."

Arsenal sacked Emery on Friday morning, after a string of poor performances.

The Gunners have failed to win in a match in their last seven fixtures in all competitions.

The Emirates Stadium hierarchy eventually decided to axe the manager after Arsenal lost 2-1 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League on Thursday.

Despite taking the lead through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the Gunners conceded two second-half goals to lose in a half-empty home ground.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have confirmed that the search for a new manager is already underway.

The club thanked Emery and his staff for their “unrelenting efforts”, but claimed a decision had to be made after poor results and performances.

Freddie Ljungberg has taken responsibility of the first-team until a new manager is appointed.

His first job is a Premier League trip to Norwich City on Sunday (2pm).

But Arsenal will continue their process to secure a more long-term replacement for Emery.
