MANCHESTER UNITED are set to keep their powder dry in January ahead of a fresh spending spree next summer.
United’s recent revival, combined with having three fully fit strikers in top form, means Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is content to wait before dipping into the Old Trafford vaults.
They have eyed Gareth Bale, but with Real Madrid also keen on Paul Pogba – who United won’t trade him mid-season - any deal will have to go on ice until the end of the campaign.
The return to fitness of Anthony Martial, who has three goals in his last five starts, has given them an attacking edge they lacked in the early months.
And although manager Solskjaer has cash available, he admitted: “I think now, with Anthony coming back, if we keep him fit, it gives us a big, big chance to claw back some points.
“It is not about ‘x’ amount of money, it is about who do we think will be good for the club in the long-term, not just three or four months.
“The thing is, not many clubs want to sell players in January. But we are getting players back and what we are looking at what can be available for us.”
A stuttering first couple of months has left United with a real battle to reach the top four. But Solskjaer is convinced they can do so, after rediscovering their cutting edge.
He added: “Of course I do. We’ve put ourselves in a difficult position, but then you look at the games we’ve done well in.
“We have beaten Chelsea a few times this year, we have beaten Leicester, and we have drawn against Arsenal and Liverpool.
“So for me we need to improve on games where teams give us a different challenge. We have lost
games we have dominated but we haven’t found the openings.”
