Accrington hunger delights Coleman after huge Bolton win

Accrington boss John Coleman was celebrating as his side ended a six-hour goal drought in the league in style, with a 7-1 win over 10-man Bolton.

Bolton enjoyed the ideal start, taking the lead in the fifth minute through Daryl Murphy.

However, it turned into a nightmare with the sending off of defender Josh Earl for a foul on Dion Charles, which led to a penalty and Accrington’s opener.

Colby Bishop fired home the spot-kick in the 15th minute, before Stanley doubled their tally with a diving header from the striker.

A Sean McConville double either side of half-time – both from close range – made it four, and Charles hooked home a fifth at the far post after 75 minutes.

Substitute Offrande Zanzala piled on the misery with goals in the 80th and 91st minutes.

“Even when we went behind I wasn’t worried as the lads had had chances before that,” said Coleman.

“I knew they would respond and I knew once we got one, we would go on and get another, although you never expect to get seven.

“The red card did put a different slant on the game. He has not attempted to get the ball and our player could have had a shot from 12 yards, but you don’t often see them given.

“We cannot get carried away with the result, but I was proud of the way the lads stuck to the task and we were hungry. We could have coasted the final 15 minutes but we kept looking for more goals.

“We had a 7-4 over Gillingham in 2010 but this was our biggest win since we came into the league. We have been creating chances over the last few weeks but we haven’t been able to finish. Thankfully we have finished our chances today but we have got to carry this on now.”

Keith Hill was at a loss to explain his own side’s performance.

“We weren’t at the races, it’s difficult to explain,” he said. “It’s a big bump but we can’t let it damage us too much. We have got to try and take it in isolation and not overreact.

“It is raw, it is disappointing, I am angry, but our fate hasn’t been decided on this result and, while we are embarrassed, we have to make sure it doesn’t affect our season as a whole.

“I didn’t see this coming, we didn’t compete with them and didn’t defend correctly, and that’s a shock to me.

“I am deeply disappointed, we have to learn lessons from this. Perhaps we were over-confident having gone into positive points last weekend, but players have to experience days like this and remember how they felt to make sure they don’t happen again.”
